8:00 pm New York Harmonica Ensemble - premiere series with special guest Emily Eagen
Trip writes: "The band includes me, Trip Henderson, Randy Weinstein and Marcus Milius with very special guest Emily Eagen on piano, vocals and puckulo (she's a two time world champion whistler). We are doing everything from the Delmore Brother's Blues Stay Away From Me with three part harmony singing and three part harp harmony (so pretty!) to jazz standards like In A Sentimental Mood with whistle lead and harmonica backing. We will also do some fiddle tunes both as harp and fiddle duets, and tunes done with piano accompaniment. Bass harp, chromatic, diatonic - not for those of weak disposition! Banjo Jim's is one of our favorite places to play (and the only place that would book such a thing), itÂ’s all about the music there."

8:00 pm Marta Gomez Trio featuring Roland Satterwhite and Franco Pinna
Already an accomplished performer in her home country, young Colombian singer-songwriter Marta Gomez has caught the attencion of critics and audiences of all origins. On her songs, Marta mixes the joy of the Caribbean with the nostalgia of the Andes taking the authenticity of South American indigenous folk music into a hip new realm. With four albums under her belt, this Billboard-Latin-jazz-nominee is one of the most intriguing new faces of the world music scene today. Violinist and Singer/Songwriter Roland Satterwhite has recently put together a band of top-notch musicians to play his sophisticated, often moody songs. His recent album, "Songs of Roland" showcases Satterwhite's multi-instrumental and vocal talents as well as his affinity for writing beautiful melodies. Franco Pinna is one of the most versatile musicians you may ever find. His rhyhtms on the drumset mixed with percussion instruments are just unique in any style he decides to approach. www.myspace.com/martagomez www.myspace.com/benedekband www.myspace.com/francopinna

Sana Ndiaye, a Jola master of the ekonting (akonting), was born in Casamance, the southern region of Senegal, in the village of Djembering. When he was a small boy, Sana's grandfather taught him to play to play the ekonting, the banjo-like folk lute of the Jola. The gourd-bodied instrument is reminiscent of the earliest forms of the banjo and is played using a down-picking technique similar to the oldest documented styles of playing the banjo. Its sound is so soothing that historically it was used to bring peace to the villagers in times of unrest. As Sana wrote for the Banjo Jim's Banjo Festival: "I will be playing the ekonting which is a three-stringed ancient instrument that has been played by members of my family for decades and passed down from generation to generation. I began learning at age 9 and actually became a master of the instrument. I am taking the ekonting to a new level as part of the Gokh-Bi System and also as part of my own band, Sana and the Ekonting Peace Band with the purpose of bringing ekonting music to a much wider audience. See you at the festival." Sana Ndiaye will be accompanied by Backa Niang, percussion and the Ekonting Peace Band.

9:00 pm Zane and Hugh Campbell - The New River Show
"New River - A Family Musical History Tour" - The subject of this DVD is a history of the Campbell and Brooks families as told through the music of Zane and Hugh Campbell. Featured are performances by the Campbell Brothers with assistance from Gary Irving. Most of the selections are Campbell originals inspired by family members or particular incidents. Hugh's composition of "Shape Of A Tear" was recorded by the Lynn Morris Band in 2003 and Zane's "Post Mortem Bar" was featured in the motion picture Longtime Companion. The highlight of the production has Hugh and Zane paying tribute to bygone members of their musical family, the most noted being their aunt Ola Belle Reed who passed away in 2002. Originally from the northwestern corner of North Carolina, Ola Belle enjoyed a long-time music career and is best remembered as composer of the classics "I've Endured" "and "High On A Mountain." Uncle Guy Brooks is not as well known, but was a member of several old-time string bands including the Red Fox Chasers. Here, he is represented by a rendition of "Virginia Bootlegger" complete with a humorous tale about the song's origin. Finally, there is Uncle Hub Campbell who was apparently quite the character in the family and best remembered for writing "Don't You Call My Name," recorded by Del McCoury, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and others. Although the meter on some performances is a bit odd, they relate wonderful stories that have happened to the Campbells over the years. "New River" is must viewing for all serious bluegrass fans and living proof that the tradition of oral storytelling is alive and well. Available through Above the Line Films, P.O. Box 134, Cape May, NJ 08204, www.abovethelinefilms.com. [Bluegrass Unlimited March 2008 issue]

Hailed as one of Canada's "hottest young guitar players," Kristin Sweetland has been much-lauded for her intricate instrumental guitarwork, rich vocals and enchanting stage presence. A born performer and true road-warrior, Sweetland brings her wild tales of adventure to the stage in a stunning and compelling spectacle. Her albums include "Own Sweet Time," released in Fall 2007, and her critically acclaimed debut, "Root, Heart & Crown." Both albums were produced by Juno award-winning multi-instrumentalist Ken Whiteley, and showcase Sweetland's stellar guitar playing alongside powerful melodies and deeply intelligent songwriting. Musically, Sweetland draws on broad influences from folk/roots, classical, flamenco, world music and rock-n-roll traditions in ways that are rich, delicious, utterly refined and unmistakably Sweetlandish. This week I'm going to get adventurous and try something entirely new .. I'm premiering an idea called Moist Paula's Make Up Bag at Banjo Jim's on the corner of Avenue C and East 9th Street in Ol' Manhattan this Saturday, May 31 at 11pm. Admission is free and my good friend Mazz Swift will be playing with her band BrazzTree at 9pm. Make Up Bag is made up of some of the finest improvisers I know: Jared Michael Nickerson on bass Meret Koehler on drums Bruce Mack on keys and Jaleel Bunton on guitar. I'll try & make up good things to play with them. Since Mazz will already be there I'm hoping to rope her in on electric violin, likewise my friend and fellow Hedonistic Hornblower Dave Smith on trombone. This may be history in the making, so come through & bear witness.

  Latin NY Now
Our great new monthly series of original Americana music of the Americas (Latin NY Now) curated by Sebastian Cruz, Dennis Lichtman, Jamie Lyn and Roland Satterwhite
9:30 pm La Cumbiamba eNeYe with special guest Marta Gomez
La Cumbiamba eNeYe was created in the summer of 2000 by a group of musicians of caliber who share an enthusiasm for investigating, performing and advancing musical expressions emanating from the mix of African, Native Indian and European cultural contributions in the Americas. The band adopted its denomination of "Cumbiamba" from the cultural vocabulary of the north western Caribbean coast in South America. In Colombia, "Cumbiamba" is a familiar word that denotes an outdoors celebration with live cumbia music, or the bands that perform in such events. La Cumbiamba Eneye evokes this lively athmosphere with every performance, spreading it to multiple cultural venues troughout the city and beyond. Marta Gomez mixes the joy of the Caribbean with the nostalgia of the Andes adding jazz and pop elements, taking the authenticity of South American indigenous folk music into a hip new realm. With more than 70 composed songs, this young singer-songwriter not only traverses a whole range of Colombian cumbias and bambucos, Argentine zambas, Cuban sones and Peruvian landos but she also writes the kind of melodies and refrains that translate across whatever language she is singing in. That may be the reason that lead Marta to share the stage with musicians of different genres such as Bonnie Raitt , John Mayer, Totó la Momposina and Mercedes Sosa. Marta was also chosen to record Kris Kristofferson’s “The Circle” on a tribute to this great American icon. Marta “lifted that song up to when it’s supposed to be, to where it belongs” in Kristofferson’s own words.
10:30 Lucia Pulido - despecho (broken heart songs) with emsemble
Lucia Pulido is a Colombian singer with one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene today. She has mined the musical traditions of her native Colombia and other Latin American countries in an ongoing search for a distinct, experimental style, and has participated in various projects, ranging from traditional Colombian music to jazz and "Nueva Canción" (New Song). Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos of the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for musical creativity. Lucía's vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería), funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra) which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully.
  11:30 Semilla
Founded in 2001, Semilla is a collective of young Mexican musicians and dancers performing Son Jarocho, in the New York City area. Hailing from diverse parts of Mexico, from Veracruz to Mexico City, Semilla's focus is the fandango celebrated for this traditional style. They have traveled to different parts of the country learning and performing. From fandangos in Veracruz to Mexico City, they have received essential lessons on how to play and dance the traditional son. Semilla pioneered Son Jarocho in New York City organizing fandangos every month in different venues like Carlitos Cafe (sadly now closed) in East Harlem and HECHO EN DUMBO in Brooklyn. Education and awareness on Son Jarocho are part of the mission of the group that has performed and taught workshops on the genre in schools throughout New York.
