  7 - 9 Nuala Kennedy
Scottish domiciled Irish traditional singer and flute player Nuala Kennedy performs a range of material from across the Irish and Scottish traditional music repertoires. Her traditional songs include those from Ireland, Scotland, sung in English and occasionally in Gaelic.

She also composes her own idiosyncratic brand of traditional music and tours in a variety of line-ups from duo and quartet to a nine-piece festival band. Her debut solo album 'The New Shoes' released on Compass Records was warmly received around the world. It was voted traditional album of the week by The Irish Times, and traditional highlight of 2008 by Hotpress.

As well as performing the traditional music she grew up with, Kennedy often works with musicians from other genres. In July 2009, in collaboration with support from the Scottish Arts Council, she toured a successful new world music project entitled 'VOYAGE DE NUIT', showcasing songs and compositions inspired by flamenco, jazz and traditional music. In October 2009, she tours Ireland with MISLAID, a collaboration with Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Euros Childs (Gorky's Zygotic Mynci) and Irish fiddler Caoimhin O' Raghaillaigh.

She has performed and recorded with American hipster and indie-poet Will Oldham (Domino Records 2008), French guitarist Philippe Guidat, Nova Scotian traditional musician Troy McGillivray and cutting-edge Canadian composer Oliver Schroer, with whom she recorded 'Enthralled' a duo album of entirely original compositions. She is also part of the group ORIEL: the Music and Song of South-East Ulster, which features Gerry 'fiddle' O'Connor, Giles le Bigot and Martin Quinn.

Manhattan native FAUSTO BOZZA made his stage debut at the age of two in a performance of Madame Butterfly (his parents were professional opera singers.) He has since developed his own wide-ranging style of musicianship. Fausto's solo material is inspired by a variety of sources - including Blind Blake, Irving Berlin, Leo Kottke, and Hank Williams - and his own compositions are performed in his own distinctive style. In addition to performing solo, Fausto plays in a duet and trio format and is the leader and frontman of Groovalaya, a NYC-based swing and roots music band. He also plays guitar and sings in Swingadelic, a New Jersey based big band. Fausto doubles on the mandolin and tiple.

Your host, MONICA PASSIN (aka Li'l Mo) is a singer, song writer, guitar player, and bandleader who has just released her third album, Li'l Mo & the Monicats On The Moon, for the Cow Island Music label. "Passin is a deeply soulful country singer...she has a way of delivering heartbreak lyrics that puts her at some scary point at which survival through strength and complete emotional collapse seem like equally viable options at any given second. That does get your attention...On the Moon testifies to Passin's evolving taste and sensibility, now encompassing not only country traditionalism but pop classicism. If you grew up with the styles she references, you'll be charmed. Even if you didn't, I imagine you will be, too. She isn't just channeling the material. It's all in her own voice, never less than confident, powerful and fully in charge." -Jerome Clark, Rambles.net

55 Years of East Village Music: an Amram Jam for Banjo Jim's

with the David Amram Quartet, & Lenny Kaye
also John Ventimiglia,
Brooklyn Boogaloo Blowout featuring Bill Sims Jr., Morley & many more!

David Amram, composer, conductor, jazz french horn player and international music ambassador, headlines the show. His history with the Greenwich Village music scene dates back to 1955 when he met Banjo Jim's namesake's mother Sylvia Karpe. In 1956 Joe Papp started the New York Shakespeare Festival at 6th St between Ave C and D , with Amram as their first composer in residence (1956-68). Amram also worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, artist Franz Kline, and recently wrote a book ("Offbeat: Collaborating wth Kerouac") about his friendship with Jack Kerouac, including making the film "Pull my Daisy"

Lenny Kaye, an avid fan of Banjo Jim's brings our 55 year story into the 70's. He first started recording and producing in the 60's and has been guitarist for poet-rocker Patti Smith since her band's inception in 1971. He has also worked with such artists as Suzanne Vega, Jim Carroll, Soul Asylum, and Allen Ginsberg. Musician, producer and author, Kaye is the co-author of Waylon, the story of Waylon Jennings and his seminal anthology of sixties' garage-rock, Nuggets, has long been regarded as defining a genre.

Actor John Ventimiglia, best known for his role in the TV series The Sopranos, is also a painter and a singer-songwriter (formerly with the defunct '80s guitar rock band Zuzu's Petals). In August, 2007, he and the Amram brought their musical and oral homage to sociologist C. Wright Mills and author Jack Keroouac across the U.S. and to Denmark.

MORE DETAILS TO COME! Feel the LOVE!!!

  7 - 9 The Brother Boys
The Brother Boys, Ed Snodderly, guitar and vocal, Eugene Wolf, guitar and vocal reignite their New Hillbilly sound for Banjo Jim's. Inspired by the brother acts of old, the chemistry is magical, producing music that, according to Acoustic Guitar magazine, takes "an old-timey view of the modern world and a modern gander at the old-timey one." Releasing three acclaimed albums--their self-titled debut (New Hillbilly/Zu-zazz Records, 1989), Plow (Sugar Hill Records, 1993), and Presley's Grocery (Sugar Hill, 1996)--The Brother Boys garnered national, even international attention. The group was featured in People Magazine, the reviewer remarking that Snodderly and Wolf sounded "like hillbillies whose moonshine got spiked with acid," while the first Brother Boys album was reissued on CD in Germany. In 1992 The Brother Boys appeared as guest vocalists on Jerry Douglas' Grammy-nominated album Slide Rule, singing Snodderly's song "Pearlie Mae." The Brother Boys'/Douglas' recording of "Pearlie Mae" became a bluegrass hit, remaining for a year in the top five on the bluegrass music survey chart; in 2000 Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine ranked that version of "Pearlie Mae" (Snodderly had originally recorded the song for his first solo album) as being among the most popular bluegrass hits recorded during the 1990s (#64 on that magazine's 1990s-spanning Top 200 list). Dr. Gary Smith joins them on upright bass.

Kent Burnside admits he is a country boy. With his independent release of past year's Cotton Field Disco and Country Boy City Dreams and his newest, Evil, Kent Burnside is bringing his new generation of blues to the world. Kent has toured and supported his grandfather R.L. Burnside (Fat Possum Records) and many other greats, such as Buddy Guy, North Mississippi Allstars, Jimbo Mathus and Junior Kimbrough just to name a few.   8 Uncle Monk - CANCELLED due to weather
UNCLE MONK is an indie-acoustic duo featuring TOMMY RAMONE on vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo and dobro, and CLAUDIA TIENAN on vocals, guitar and bass.

Uncle Monk's music is rooted in old-time and bluegrass influences. To this mix they have added unique musical textures to create a sound with a new sensibility. "We are working with what feels natural to us." says Ramone. "We are making use of string-band instrumentation along with alternative rock flavorings. We use mandolins and other stringed instruments to add texture and dimension to the overall sound. We have been drawn towards the classic simplicity of string band music, but at the same time we are deeply involved with the aesthetics of alternative music, and we do our best to use our musical influences to create an original style. There is a similarity between punk & old time music, both are home brewed as opposed to schooled, both have earthy energy, and there is a certain cool in old time music that is found in the best alternative acts."

Dave has been a mainstay on the New York music scene for over 20 years, playing with some of the most important figures of blues, roots and folk music. "...a sort of Medeski, Martin and Mahavishnu thing that cuts loose from tight heads to travel the spaceways." VILLAGE VOICE JNS has haunted NYC in various forms since its formative Knitting Factory Tap Bar days in the mid-90's; the group's newest incarnation uses laptops, mysterious pedals, and outright wonkiness to elevate the Situation to 21st century standards, for worse or, perhaps, better.
  11-? - Teddy Kumpel Orchestra
"Teddy is not as dumb as I look. He's an effects monster, a lick meister who leaves a cool, refreshing taste in your ears." -Adrian Belew

Teddy's music reflects that fact that he is comfortable with the eccentric and the mainstream equally. He straddles the line between songwriter, jam band, guitar hero and avant funkster. Teddy's vast experience with guitar effects is showcased in his newest group the Teddy Kumpel Orchestra (TKO), a trio with Saturday Night Live drummer, Shawn Pelton and bassist extraordinaire, Tim LeFebvre. Teddy's unique take on live looping and texturally advanced use of the Line 6 M13 has been wowing audiences in New York and elsewhere for the last couple of years.

One of the most richly multistylistic songwriters of recent years, Jenifer Jackson's bossa-nova inflected songs are like a tropical breeze with an undercurrent of wintry unease - disarmingly honest, unaffectedly poetic, solace for anyone who's spent this past winter here.   NORTH MISSISSIPPI HILL COUNTRY NIGHT!
  9 - Garry Burnside
As long as the Burnsides can remember the sounds of the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues has been resonating in their ears. It is as much a part of their upbringing as is the English language. Garry is the youngest son of the legendary R.L. Burnside. Garry played with the North Mississippi All Stars for some time.
  10 - Pork Chop Willie
Check out a great review of Pork Chop Willie's previous show at Banjo Jim's on blogcritics.org!
12 - Kent Burnside and the New Generation
From the porches of The Misssissippi Hill Country and straight to the stage, Kent Burnside and The New Generation have mastered the raw emotion and rhythms of the Mississippi hill country blues, passed down from Kent's blood line. Sweet as a Mississippi sunset after the rain. The Blues live on with Burnside family.

His family name defines the unique Hill Country Blues sound created by his legendary grandfather, the late R.L. Burnside. However, Kent is taking it to another level.

With ruby red lips hovering inches from the microphone, Linnzi Zaorski stares dreamily into the eyes of the audience packed into the small club, as she croons about love and loss.

With her perfectly pinned blonde hair and sirenesque looks, Linnzi harks back to the days when women were women, and jazz was jazz.   9 - 11 Silk City
SILK CITY's music is dazzling yet accessible, innovative with a sense of tradition, for the serious listener yet always delivered with a light touch. The trio is one of the most exciting new additions to the acoustic/string music scene. They have no new name for their sound - it's just great music, thoughtfully put together and artfully presented by three individuals committed to their audience and to the further development of acoustic music in the 21st century.

DANNY WEISS is the guitarist and lead singer for the trio. His double-edged talents as a singer and a player make him sought after by many groups. Along with Mitterhoff, Cohen and banjoist Tony Trischka, Danny was a founding member of the pioneering new-grass band Skyline. He has appeared with Tex Logan, Vasser Clements, and David Bromberg. His great sound and unique soloing has been recognized by Frets magazine and he has been featured recently in the soundtrack of Disney's 2002 release, The Rookie, as well as in concerts and workshops both nationally and recently in Spain, Russia, and the Czech Republic. He also moonlights as the Director of the Fanwood (NJ) Memorial Library.

LARRY COHEN's ability as a monster bass player, arranger, and record producer first earned public recognition through his work with Skyline. He has since produced innovative acoustic albums for Barry Mitterhoff, Jay Ansel, and Akira Satake, and performed with Nick Jamison, Darol Anger, and Mike Marshall. A joy to watch on stage, as well as to listen to, Larry's approach is informed by his background in classical, jazz, and rock music, and by his innate sense of musicality.

Mandolinist BARRY MITTERHOFF has developed an international reputation for his versatility, having adapted the mandolin to, and mastered musical styles as diverse as bluegrass, opera, Jewish klezmer, Dixieland, old-time, classical, Brazilian, Italian and 19th-century American duo-style.
Barry is currently an active member of Hot Tuna, and has performed with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, banjoist Tony Trischka, appeared at the Metropolitan Opera with renowned singer Jerry Hadley, played and recorded with folk-singer Tom Chapin; appeared at the Smithsonian Institute and elsewhere with hard-hitting singer, songwriter and labor activist Hazel Dickens and performed with innovative "free" music composer Eugene Chadborn at New York City's Knitting Factory. In addition, Barry has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Library of Congress, the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and New York's famous Rainbow Room, and has performed in concert and at music festivals throughout the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Europe. He's contributed music to the score of films such as You've Got Mail, Mickey Blue Eyes, Two Family House, the Coen Brothers', O Brother Where Art Thou and The Rookie. Barry is also the most current member of Hot Tuna!

  7:30 Nuala Kennedy

  7 18 Strings and a Dozen Roses
18 Strings and a Dozen Roses is a monthly hour-long series hosted by veteran guitarist Pete Kennedy. In an informal setting, three master guitarists develop off-the-cuff arrangements of guitar classics, trade stories, field questions from the audience, and generally have a good time doing what they do best. It's all about spontaneity, taste, fun, and a deep love for New York City's favorite axe.

Pete Kennedy is best known as the lead guitarist/producer half of pop duo The Kennedys, but his credits range from backing Dr. John, Nanci Griffith and Mary-Chapin Carpenter to sitting in with the National Symphony and playing in the pit for Cats and Evita. A protege of Danny Gatton, Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd and Johnny Smith, Pete brings an encyclopedic knowledge of all things guitar to the stage, and now and then he might even play a bit of Gershwin on the ukulele.
www.petekennedy.com

Steve Addabbo's production work is one of the keystones of the singer-songwriter movement. His production credits include Suzanne Vega's groundbreaking "Solitude Standing", her massive hit. "Luka", and Sean Colvin's major label debut, as well as Eric Andersen's legendary "Ghosts Upon the Road". Steve has a producer's ear for tasty guitar, and his sound, featuring a lovely vintage Stratocaster, has become a template for contemporary singer-songwriter CD projects.

Ward White is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who has written and produced six original albums. His latest collaborative effort with Joe McGinty, McGinty & White Sing Selections From The McGinty & White Songbook, was named one of the top 5 records of 2009 by New York Press. He's equally adept at guitar and smooth, artful vocals, and he's a regular performer with the long running Loser's Lounge tribute series.

MAY INSTALLMENT - THE "MMMM, THAT'S GOOOOD" SHOW

featuring:
GENE CASEY, MARY BATTIATA, NATE SCHWEBER, MONICA PASSIN
singers, song writers, and players sitting around singing and playing
A mainstay on the east coast roots rock circuit since the late 1980s, singer, songwriter, & guitarist GENE CASEY and his band the LONE SHARKS have "played - and torn up -- virtually every roadhouse, bar, and honky-tonk from Manhattan to Montauk" (Bop! Magazine) and produced five CDs of original songs that reflect Gene's deep understanding of the classic rockabilly, C&W and R&B tradition.
Gene's songs and performances have been used in a pair of independent films ("When Pigs Fly" 2002; "The Regulars" 2005) and two songs were featured in an episode of FX Network's acclaimed TV show "JUSTIFIED." Reviewing 2008's "What Happened" Baylis Greene in The East Hampton STAR wrote: "Mr. Casey has explored the more rewarding corners of country and western music and its progeny and come up with a disc that remains thematically of a piece - love, sex, and what the hell goes wrong - while he and the boys change speeds with practically each song in turn."

Critics often liken MARY BATTIATA's voice and her songwriting to Linda Thompson, Dolly Parton and Rosanne Cash, among others. Well, okay! That's just fine with her! Mary's debut recording, "Cul-de-sac Cowgirl" (Adult Swim/2001) and 2007's "Gladly Would We Anchor" (Night World) were praised by No Depression ("jittery, jangly shimmer"), The Washington Post ("quiet, subtle, insinuating ...") and Harp ("Mary Battiata sings like an angel.") "Gladly" landed her on NYC music blog Lucid Culture's list of "The Best 50 Albums of 2008," and John Conquest, of Austin's 3rd Coast Music, put her on his short list of the "Best of 2007 (Songwriters)". As usual, Conquest nailed it: "Part twang, part folk, part pop, Battiata's not the most accessible of songwriters, but she's all the more rewarding for that." Mary tours from home base in Arlington Va., across the river from Washington DC, where she performs solo and with her alt-country project, LITTLE PINK.

MONICA PASSIN, your host for the proceedings, is a singer, song writer, guitar player, and leader of the band Li'l Mo & the Monicats, whose third album, "On The Moon," is currently in release. "One giant rockin' leap for mankind - Li'l Mo crooning on her tune-moon, boldly dismissing all gravity, her massively eclectic, don't-fence-me-in music rocketing at us, trailing Gene Vincent vintage, Stax/Volt essence, new/old blues and unpolluted country and western music." -David Silver (writer, The Compleat Beatles)

  10 - 12 Linnzi Zaorski
New Orleans jazz singer Linnzi Zaorski now splits her time between coasts. According to Offbeat Magazine "Linnzi is the Ninth Ward's torchiest torch singer, evoking the lost, romantic days when men were men and women were dames in seamed stockings and stiletto heels."

Listening to her smoky voice sing the type of bluesy jazz standards that stars like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday once crooned you feel transported back to the bygone days of a 1930s prohibition-era speak easy.

Kent Burnside admits he is a country boy. With his independent release of past year's Cotton Field Disco and Country Boy City Dreams and his newest, Evil, Kent Burnside is bringing his new generation of blues to the world. Kent has toured and supported his grandfather R.L.   7 18 Strings and a Dozen Roses
Pete Kennedy presents the third show in his 18 Strings and a Dozen Roses series. Each program features Pete and two guest guitarists talking a little bit about the instrument and their creative process, and playing a lot of guitar, with all three pickers interacting spontaneously on stage.

The June edition is devoted to slide guitar, featuring "Brooklyn Delta Blues" phenom
Pat Wictor, an inspiring songwriter, and one of the few artists who can pull off the eerie vibe of a Skip James song. He and Pete have been know to tackle Coltrane and Pharoah Saunders tunes on bottleneck guitars.
Sharing the stage is the one and only Rocky Roberts, guitar tech and road manager to a pantheon of roots rockers, including Neil Young and Crazy Horse, CS&N, David Lindley and currently My Morning Jacket. His decades-long association with Neil Young has kept him at the epicenter of the roots music scene, and he's a great singer-songwriter and lap steel master in his own right. We're lucky to catch him off the road!

Certainly there are echoes of Woody Guthrie, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan, but, "through a glass darkly," as a writer once put it. Adler has cut his own path here and has cultivated a strong and unique voice which not only honors the tradition of the folk music from which it was born, but that will speak equally to fans of Whitman, Kerouac, and Fitzgerald

JUNE INSTALLMENT - a twangSHANG-A-LANGthang, with plenty of CBGB (country/bluegrass/blues) featuring:
TOMMY RAMONE & CLAUDIA TIENAN (UNCLE MONK),
HOMEBOY STEVE, and LI'L MO
UNCLE MONK is an indie-acoustic duo featuring TOMMY RAMONE and CLAUDIA TIENAN. Uncle Monk's music is rooted in old-time and bluegrass influences. To this mix they have added unique musical and lyrical textures to create a sound with a new sensibility. Their critically acclaimed CD is titled 'Uncle Monk' on Airday Records.
TOMMY RAMONE began his musical career as Tom Erdelyi, an engineer at the Record Plant recording studios. In the musical doldrums of the 70's he, along with Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee Ramone, formed the rock group Ramones and participated in the birth of New Wave, Punk Rock, and Alternative music.
CLAUDIA TIENAN, formerly with the group The Simplistics, is a partner with Tommy Ramone in Uncle Monk. Her penetrating lyrics and haunting vocals add facets and dimension to the songs. The music of the two artists complements each other. There is a Yin and Yang sensibility at work, a touch of light and dark, of bitter and sweet.

HOMEBOY STEVE, nee Stephen B. Antonakos, has played with a succession of American roots bands spanning the last twenty years, including the Blue Chieftains, 5 Chinese Brothers and Greg Garing. Currently he plays with the cajun/zydeco band Dirty Water Dogs, Magges (traditional Greek music), The Plumbers (Tex-Mex-calypso-billy), Love Camp 7 (indie pop) and Drina Seay. He hopes that there's one or two good songs left that haven't already been written and he presents his attempts to write and perform them accompanied by his guitar.

As LI'L MO (MONICA PASSIN) announces with one guitar chord on her most recent release, 'On The Moon'...."I could get used to this". She has her words, and intentions, set on a love interest. The track, on a larger scale, foretells a lot more. The ease and warm grooves set up and served on the album go down like honey. Li'l Mo's syrupy vocals ride shotgun over and a suitcase full of rhythms and styles brought to the party by The Monicats. The Zydeco shuffle, "Dance Crazed", pops with handclaps and slow drawl vocals, 60's girl group sounds get a re-birth on "I Really Love (to Really Love You)" and Western Swing hits its mark on "I've Got A New Heartache".
"'On The Moon' serves notice as an overview of American music. If recorded material could pass for textbooks, the lessons learned here would get an A. Fat guitar notes never get fancy. The carefully placed notes texture to the determination of sturdy beats. The slow moving pace of "I'm Here Today" walks the walk of a funeral march out to a St. Louis Cemetery while organ swells and choral style background vocals nudge Li'l Mo's soft tones up to the angel territory. There is a natural confidence that Li'l Mo grants us access to in her songs. That ability allows her to move between genres effortlessly with carefully placed steps. She owns what she touches, get used to that!" -http://thealternateroot.com/
