Information for Bands/Musicians interested in playing at Banjo Jim's

  1. Banjo Jim's is a venue where musicians play for tips. We rarely charge a cover and we cannot offer a guarantee.
What we do is to provide a venue that appreciates original and traditional music. If the bartender is not too busy, they will pass the tip basket for you once a set. If they are busy, then it is your responsibility to ask someone to do it for you. It helps if you make an announcement when it is passed.

  2. Due potential liability issues, we cannot hire any musicians who are under 21 years of age.

  3. We have a website with the schedule on it and we email a weekly newsletter as well.
Please send us website links, a short blurb, and your favorite publicity photo. Press quotes are good also.
Especially when you play here the first time, we would like to say something about you, so we need to know how to describe you.

  4. You need to do publicity also!
Although we have regulars, we cannot guarantee you an audience.
Please email your fans and promote your show on facebook, twitter, myspace, etc..
If you make a poster, mail 4 copies to us to put up in the bar, or you can drop them off during the bar's open hours. Mail the poster to:
Banjo Jim's, 700 East 9th St., New York, NY 10009.
Please be sure to include the date and time of show on the poster. Don't just send a generic publicity poster without the information added!
You also need to put it up on the streets.
If you have digital copy of the poster email it to me for potential inclusion in our gigs schedule.
When you tell people about Banjo Jim's you can emphasize that we are a friendly neighborhood bar that is there for the music. You may also want to note that while there is no cover charge, there is a one drink minimum per set and we pass the hat once per set with a suggested donation of $5.. We have a full liquor bar and variety of beers, wines and non-alcoholic drinks.

  5. The stage is approximately 8' x 14' We have a back line. Please use our equipment. If you bring your own amp, they must adhere to our strict volume limitations. The back line consists of:
    • 16 input PA,
    • 2 DI boxes
    • guitar amp
    • bass amp
    • Upright Piano with dedicated microphone
    • the basis for drum kit (bass drum, tom and cymbal stands)
    • Drummer will need to bring cymbals, and snare if desired.
    • 3 vocal mics and 1 instrument mic,
    • 4 mic stands

  6. We don't have a dedicated sound person.
The bartender will help you get set up and run the sound for you. They will do a quick line check right before you start.

  7. Please keep the volume at a moderate level.
We can be amplified, but there is a limit. We are in a neighborhood, and we need to respect our neighbors. We cannot be fined or shut down.
If the bartender asks you to turn down, please respect his/her request. If you don't, your show can be shut down.

  8. We have as many as 6 different bands playing on any given night.
It is important that you all work together to present a full evening of great music. This means:
    • getting to Banjo Jim's at least 15 minutes before the time of your set.
    • ending your set on time (there is a clock onstage for your convenience)
    • mention the name of the band that is following you at the end of your set

  9. The bartender also works with you and all of the bands to keep everything running smoothly.
Please suggest to the audience that they should tip him/her.
Always remember that they are in charge and if they ask you to turn it down or anything else, respect their authority.

  10. If something comes up on the day of the gig and you are going to be late, call during business hours at 212-777-0869 and talk to the bartender.
Do not just leave a message.
If something comes up before the day of your gig that will cause you to be late or worse, cancel a date, email info@banjojims.com as soon as possible. This puts us in a bad situation and makes you look bad also, so please honor all commitments you make. But if there is a reason you cannot do the gig, let us know as soon as possible so we can try to find a replacement.
